The board approved transferring $285,000 from the Colonial Downs reserve to cover the county’s portion of a $600,000 Cox Communications contract amendment to include 124 locations in the broadband buildout.
The New Kent County Board of Supervisors approved a $285,000 transfer from the Colonial Downs reserve on Nov. 12 to cover the county’s share of a $600,000 contract amendment with Cox Communications to extend service to 124 additional locations.
Finance Director Lawrence said Cox found 124 locations that were not included in the original 2022 buildout agreement and requested reimbursement on the same cost‑share terms signed in 2022, with Cox covering 52.5% and the county responsible for roughly 47.5% (about $285,000). "They have located 124 locations that were not in their initial buildout in the 2022 agreement we signed," Lawrence said.
Board members asked whether more outliers might appear; staff said Cox is close to completing speed testing and is about 98% complete based on the most recent report. The board approved the funding transfer by roll call and noted the county expects to be among the first rural counties in the state to reach countywide broadband coverage when the project wraps up.
The transfer will be administered from the Colonial Downs Reserve for Future Projects and follow existing terms of the county’s broadband agreement with Cox.
