Brian Anthony Campbell of Broward Organized Leaders Doing Justice (Bold Justice) described residents living in single rooms and seniors on fixed incomes and urged the board to adopt a resolution directing 90% of expired tax‑increment financing (TIF) funds to affordable housing, with 60% targeted for households under 60% area median income (AMI). "These stories are not exceptions — they are 150,000 families, seniors and workers suffering across Broward County," Campbell said.
Rev. Aaron Lauer and other pastors supported the proposal and asked the commission to bring a strengthened resolution forward by mid‑February. Commissioners responded that the county has already increased TIF allocations to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund in recent years and listed existing programs (landlord recruitment, eviction prevention); several commissioners committed to continued engagement and invited advocates to follow up with staff to shape any formal proposal.
No formal board action was taken at this meeting; commissioners acknowledged the urgency and expressed willingness to consider stronger policy options during upcoming budget and legislative work.
