Duarte High student board member flags culinary class supply problem

At the Nov. 13 Duarte Unified board meeting, student board member Alexis briefed the board on campus activities and raised a concern affecting the culinary arts program at Duarte High School. Alexis told the board that Chef Prince was unable to purchase food during specific times of the month because of invoicing/payment issues with Smart & Final, which left students without ingredients and disrupted planned cooking classes.
Interim Superintendent Crosby and staff said they and site personnel are working with the vendor and reviewing purchasing access (including CalCards) to restore reliable supplies. Crosby noted that school-site staff, Director of Student Services and procurement staff (including Mr. Harrow and Ms. Bell) were engaged to resolve preplanning and vendor-access issues so classes can resume normal operations.
Alexis also reported on recent campus events — Red Ribbon Week, Unity Day, band competitions, and a holiday food drive and giving-tree donation effort — and praised the new gym and rally activities. Board members thanked Alexis and asked staff to follow up on the culinary procurement issue.
