The Shelbyville City Council on Nov. 13 voted to change the city’s employee medical insurance to a Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan with Zurich gap coverage and to add Dental Elite Plus with vision coverage, with the change effective Jan. 1.
An ad hoc employee benefits review committee presented the recommendation to the council. Committee members and the city manager said the anticipated savings initially expected did not fully materialize but that the recommended plan still provided better benefits for employees. During discussion council members referenced an estimated savings figure in the neighborhood of $15,000 but said the exact savings was not precisely determined in the meeting.
Scott Collins, City Manager, praised the ad hoc committee’s work: "This ad hoc group...worked with some good committees...they definitely made sure they did a deal for the employees and for the city itself," according to the transcript. The council moved and seconded the item, then approved it by roll-call vote with all present voting yes.
Practical effect: the insurance change will take effect Jan. 1; staff should implement enrollment and notify employees of plan changes and any differences in employee contributions. The council’s minutes record the formal vote and any related administrative steps.
