Students showcase GATE projects at Beardsley Dual Language Academy during Duarte Unified board meeting

Principal Jenny Romero presented a spotlight on Beardsley Dual Language Academy’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) enrichment program at the Duarte Unified board meeting on Nov. 13. Romero said the GATE program serves third through eighth graders and gives students opportunities for interdisciplinary, hands-on projects that extend classroom learning.
Several students spoke to the board about their projects: fourth grader Amaris Sedanowen described creating a fiction book to read to younger students; a fifth-grader, Diego Diaz, recounted research and art inspired by Frida Kahlo and butterfly studies; sixth graders described heritage preservation work; and seventh- and eighth-grade students explained preparation steps for a sheep-eye dissection. Romero and teacher Miss Lucero were thanked by board members for their leadership in the program.
Board members praised the students’ bilingual abilities and public-speaking skills. Board President and several members said they were impressed by the students’ poise and the program’s interdisciplinary work. The board encouraged continued family engagement and thanked parents in attendance.
