At its Nov. 13 meeting the Shelbyville City Council approved a $10,000 sponsorship for the Bedford County Christmas event set for Dec. 5 and approved sending a letter to the Shelbyville/Bedford County Chamber of Commerce requesting the city be enrolled at a gold membership level with up to $5,000 allocated from hotel/motel funds if the Chamber accepts.
Mayor and councilmembers described last year’s celebration as successful; one councilmember said, “It was a wonderful time last year,” in support of the sponsorship. The sponsorship is included in the city’s FY26 budget and was approved by roll-call vote with all present voting yes.
A separate motion to send the Chamber membership letter—plus conditional authorization to spend up to $5,000 from hotel/motel revenue if the Chamber accepts—was moved and seconded and later approved by roll-call vote. Council discussion clarified that the $5,000 would come from hotel/motel funds only if the Chamber accepts the membership offer.
Next steps: city staff will send the membership letter and, if the Chamber accepts, the city will allocate the hotel/motel funds as authorized. The Clerk’s roll-call and meeting minutes provide the official record of the votes and funding source.
