The Winona County Board approved hiring Phil Sonnenberg as the county’s next director of finance, subject to a satisfactory background check.
Todd Sadler introduced Sonnenberg, noting the county had eight candidates for the position. Sonnenberg told the board he holds a BS in accounting from Winona State University and has 13 years of experience, most recently as foundation controller at Winona State. “I’ve proudly lived in this community for 30 years,” Sonnenberg said.
Commissioners moved and seconded the appointment. Sadler said the hire remains conditional on background information and a start date will be set once that process completes. The board approved the recommendation by voice vote.
Next steps: human resources and the county administrator’s office will complete background checks and confirm a start date; staff affirmed the board will be notified if any issues arise.
