Tri-Creek board tables 2026–27 academic calendar after debate on 4‑H conflicts and attendance

The Tri-Creek School Corporation board opened discussion on four draft 2026–27 academic calendars and ultimately voted to table the item for additional study and community input.

Superintendent Dr. Greg Anderson presented four options (drafts a–d) that differ in student start dates and end dates to balance standardized testing windows, teachers’ professional time and honoring Lake County Fair/4‑H participation. Anderson recommended draft B, which he described as a compromise to honor 4‑H participants while keeping an earlier start to benefit younger students academically.

Board members and community-focused trustees raised tradeoffs: several spoke in support of honoring 4‑H participants and rural agricultural ties, noting 4‑H requires long summer commitments; others emphasized the academic and acclimation benefits of getting students and kindergartners into school for the first days. Trustees also expressed concern that later end dates may compress summer and that starting immediately after Memorial Day (in some drafts) could risk elevated absenteeism and harm report card attendance metrics.

After discussion, a trustee moved to table the calendar and seek further input and data; another trustee seconded and the motion to table passed by voice vote. Anderson said staff will continue work on calendar options and engage community stakeholders and teacher input before bringing the matter back for action.

What’s next: The board will solicit more information and community feedback, and the calendar will return as an action item at a future meeting.
