Board hears detailed construction update on new Buchanan County high school

The Buchanan County School Board received a comprehensive construction update on the new high school from the SANSCO representative, who said key exterior and interior milestones are in progress.

“At this point curb and gutter install for the student and staff parking is near completion,” the SANSCO representative reported, adding that roofing work is nearly finished across most of the building and that MEP rough‑in continues. He said roofing on the remaining low‑roof areas and additional exterior sealing are scheduled in the coming weeks and that crews plan asphalt work as weather allows.

The contractor described interior progress as well: drywall and insulation are hung in multiple wings, the auditorium scaffold is being installed to allow ductwork and lighting work overhead, and low‑voltage cabling and fire alarm pulls have begun. He also showed drone footage and site photos of the parking area, bus loop and athletic‑field footings, noting that concrete footers for bleachers and retaining walls were under construction.

Board members pressed only briefly for clarification; the presiding officer said the district and contractor will continue to update the board at future meetings. The contractor noted that the brick work and some exterior block work should be completed by the next board meeting and that heating units had been brought in temporarily to allow interior finishing during cold weather.

The board did not take action on construction items during the update; later in the meeting it approved a contract amendment for the project and a change order that the board described as resulting in a credit.

Next steps: the district staff and contractor will finalize roofing and asphalt schedules and bring any contract adjustments back to the board for approval if required.
