Residents press SAD 52 on taxes, restroom safety and school policy during public comment

Crystal Nicholas of Green urged restraint in the budget process, saying many families face steep utility and property-tax increases. "Be merciful this budget season and keep the increase well below 5% or simply not increase at all," Nicholas said, urging wealthier residents to consider direct donations if they wished to help schools without raising the tax rate.
Chris Pillsbury Turner described safety and disciplinary concerns in school bathrooms, telling the board that students had climbed over stall partitions and that vaping remained a problem. "The vaping is part of the problem. I know that the high school has got vape detectors in there. They're not working," Pillsbury Turner said, asking the board to follow up on detector function and restroom supervision.
Jimmy Childs raised concerns about school approaches to gender identity for children, arguing that adults should not promote identity adjustments for minors and invoked his reading of the Maine Human Rights Act in framing the issue.
Board response: the chair and administration listened, reiterated public-comment rules (policy BEDH) and noted personnel complaints cannot be handled in public comment. There was no formal board action taken on the points raised; members flagged budget deliberations and policy committee work as the appropriate forum for further consideration.
