Superintendent Ed told the board the position would likely cover roughly half a school year at a cost of about $48,000, with the district evaluating whether to hire an employee or contract the service. "At this point, we're looking at a half a year. The cost is about $48,000," Ed said.
Board members asked for operational details before the vote. Board member Brie asked whether the nurse would be posted and whether the nurse would remain with the student all day; administration confirmed the role is assigned to an individual student rather than functioning as an additional building nurse. The superintendent stated that if the position were budgeted for a full year the typical salary-plus-benefits estimate would be higher (administrative figures cited a full-year budgeted total in the range of $75,000 to $77,000 when insurance is included).
Funding and budget implications: administration said the expense will initially come from the relevant building—s special-education lines, and the district has a dedicated special-education reserve of roughly $200,000 that could be used if needed. Officials said they will review whether to draw from reserve funds later in the budget process.
The board approved the consent agenda (items 8.1A0through 8.5) on a motion by Anthony with a second by Crystal; the chair called the vote and declared it unanimous. The consent action includes the nurse position specifically identified as item 8.5.
Next steps: administration will post the position and return any further budget or contract requests to the board as needed during the FY27 budget process.
