The Sedona City Council appointed Charlotte Hosseini to fill a vacant council seat on Thursday after interviewing four finalists and holding a private deliberation. The council voted to appoint Hosseini by majority, and she was sworn in at the meeting.
Council members each announced their choice before a formal motion. Brian announced his support for Alan Alffett; Melissa, Derek, Pete, Kathy and Mayor Ploog voiced support for Charlotte Hosseini. The council then moved to appoint Hosseini and approved the motion by majority. After the vote, the clerk administered the oath of office; Hosseini repeated the oath, including the pledge "that I will support the constitution of The United States and the constitution and laws of the state of Arizona" and "that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of counselor according to the best of my abilities."
The appointment follows interviews of four candidates — Alan Alffett, Charlotte Hosseini, a candidate identified as Sean, and Ernest (Ernie) Stroud — carried out earlier in the afternoon. Council had recessed into executive session to deliberate the selection criteria and individual preferences and then returned to the public meeting to record votes and complete the appointment.
Councilors emphasized that their decision weighed an immediate need for someone who could "hit the ground running" because the council is entering budget deliberations and several major land-use and capital projects are imminent. Councilors also cited demonstrated local involvement and relevant subject-matter experience as key factors.
The council’s stated timetable was to seat an interim member for the remainder of the current term; the appointment is effective immediately. The council noted the seat will be on the ballot in the 2026 election cycle, when voters will elect members for full terms.
The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
