CSU Extension highlights 4-H outreach, new staff and skills programs in Montezuma County

Emily (county extension) said the office is using an AmeriCorps position funded through Colorado State University to expand school outreach and described activities that show 4-H is "not just about raising animals," including robotics, rocketry, cake decorating, quilting and leadership activities. "If you talk to the average person they think it's only for ag kids," a commissioner said, to which staff replied that hands-on school presentations and community events are changing perceptions.
Extension reported program metrics and events: a Tour de 4-H event that drew more than 200 children, a successful Lure Foundation gardening grant with repeat participation, Master Gardener apprenticeship growth, and a combined Society for Range Management meeting and field day that drew roughly 40-46 attendees. Extension staff said they plan agritourism workshops, succession-planning seminars and business-planning classes for new farmers and ranchers in the coming year.
Staff requested feedback and suggested further meetings to discuss outreach and program needs; commissioners thanked staff and did not take formal action at the workshop.
