Superintendent reported compaction testing failures on the Project RISE athletic complex and said the district is withholding the final ~10% payment while Mammoth evaluates remediation options ahead of spring events.
Superintendent Dr. McDowell told the board that crews removed and rebackfilled concrete in the Project RISE athletic complex but recent compaction testing failed. She said Mammoth, the contractor, is scheduled to return the next day to evaluate the issue and identify a path forward.
"Unfortunately, late last week, compaction testing failed. So Mammoth is coming out tomorrow, to troubleshoot what does that actually mean for us and what's next," she said.
Dr. McDowell said the district has withheld the final approximately 10 percent payment — about $263,000 on a roughly $2.3 million project — until the work is completed to the district’s satisfaction. She stressed that, while remediation could require substantial excavation and rebackfilling behind bleachers and retaining walls, no additional district‑funded phases are planned unless covered by private donations or the building fund.
Board members asked about timing relative to spring athletic events; Dr. McDowell said Mammoth is aware of the district’s schedule and the scoreboard installation is expected to be completed by spring. The district will update the board on Mammoth’s findings and the remediation plan once available.
