Commission approves Carmel Cares signage package for Scenic Pathway; volunteers to fund and install Phase 1

Shirley Moon of Carmel Cares described Phase 1 as a modest, icon‑based set of posts (12 proposed) and prototype trash/recycling signage that will replace inconsistent existing signage. Moon emphasized the volunteer maintenance teams’ experience in testing word choice, color and placement and described personal examples of the pathway’s value to residents and visitors. “When we were working down near the handicapped plaza … I realized that we really needed to do a lot more with our accessibility,” she said, summarizing observations gathered during volunteer work.
Staff explained the approval and installation process and noted regulatory constraints for signage along the scenic corridor; Public Works will coordinate placement to avoid private‑fence conflicts and to ensure code compliance. Commission members praised the volunteer effort and emphasized keeping the pathway visually uncluttered; the approved motion accepted the signage package as presented and directed staff to coordinate installation with Carmel Cares and Public Works. Commissioners also confirmed that Carmel Cares will remove duplicate and deteriorated existing signs as new signs are installed.
Next steps: Public Works staff to coordinate placements, Carmel Cares to fund and install Phase 1, and staff will return to commission if further phases or changes are proposed.
