Commission approves curb-space for school bus loading at 600 Rockland Street

The Traffic Commission on Nov. 11 approved a request from the School District of Lancaster to reserve curb space for bus loading and unloading at 600 Rockland Street during peak arrival and dismissal times.
Matt Shields, representing the school district, described repeated incidents where buses could not get to the curb because cars park on both sides of Rockland Street, forcing buses to stop in the travel lane. "Our buses are not able to get curbside... So our request is to limit parking along the curb during those drop-off and pickup times," Shields said.
Staff supported a simple regulatory fix: signage that restricts parking at specified times so buses can pull to the curb. Commissioners discussed enforcement concerns but noted the approach is a common safety practice. The commission moved, seconded and approved the time-limited curb restriction (item 42-2025); staff said the sign shop will post the new signage promptly.
