Berkley council applies for competitive CDBG Year 2026 funding, authorizes mayor and manager to sign

The Berkley City Council voted to adopt Resolution R2025 authorizing submission of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program Year 2026 application for roughly $97,000 and directing the mayor and city manager to sign the application.
Finance staff explained the county has shifted to a competitive selection process; historically Berkley received about $30,000 annually and used funds for architectural-barrier removal and public services. Under the new process the county will evaluate project proposals competitively and award funds to the most highly scored projects, meaning Berkley could receive nothing or it could receive the full requested amount.
Council members discussed whether joint applications with neighboring communities could improve competitiveness; staff said that is possible and that they will evaluate cooperative approaches. The council opened a brief public hearing (08:19–08:20 p.m.) on the application and then approved the resolution by roll-call vote.
