Recorder's Office: 'No Labels' name change could confuse voters; county to send clarifying notices

Erin, identifying herself as a staff member in the Greenlee County Recorder's Office, told the board during the call to the public that the national group No Labels is changing its name to "Arizona Independent Party" and warned that the group is partisan. "They're changing their name to Arizona Independent Party. They are partisan. They're not supposed to be confused with the independent party who is not a partisan," Erin said.
The Recorder's Office said it will respond by sending new voter registration cards and a letter explaining the name change and by posting information on Facebook to clear up confusion between the two groups. The notice was presented as an informational item during the public comment period and did not require board action.
The announcement arrives ahead of next year's election calendar changes staff discussed in the meeting; the Recorder's Office said the outreach is intended to ensure voters understand the distinction between a party that is formally partisan and voters who register as "independent."
