Senior Services Committee Reports Waiting Lists, Urges Focus on Aging‑in‑Place

Lafferty said the grant funds (state and federal) support nonprofit providers who deliver meals, transportation and in‑home services; she emphasized most agencies have waiting lists and that the committee monitors spending and seeks additional funders and volunteers. ‘‘Each service with the exception of transportation has a waiting list. Meals on Wheels has a waiting list, as well,’’ she said.
The committee is recruiting additional voting members and community partners, with an emphasis on health‑care representation and a VAIO representative to strengthen coordination. Lafferty flagged demographic trends from the 2022 North Carolina Aging Profile — noting roughly 25% of county residents are age 60 or older — and urged commissioners to consider aging‑in‑place strategies and support community‑based care.
What’s next: The committee will continue monitoring expenditures and fundraising; commissioners were reminded that some funding constraints stem from state and federal budget decisions beyond the county’s direct control.
