Library renovation nears finish; open house planned if work completes

Port Washington Library officials reported significant progress on a multi-stage renovation and set a possible public open house for Feb. 7.
Director Tom told the board the downstairs portion of the project is largely complete and that furniture deliveries and main-level finishing work remain. He said a software/control issue with the HVAC system added unexpected costs but that furnaces are running and vendor J&H has been engaged to finish balancing the system. “We got the furnaces running, and the building’s warm,” Tom said.
Tom described extensive bathroom work, including removal and replacement of floor surfaces to meet newer standards, and said the architect will meet with the contractor to resolve a piping issue in the new children’s bathroom. He said the project team expects the work to be finished by Christmas, but cautioned the contractor has other projects and the date depends on their schedule.
The director said the renovation is grant-funded and that this library may be among the first in the state to complete its grant scope. He proposed an open house for Saturday, Feb. 7, 1–3 p.m., contingent on completion.
Tom also noted kitchen work and described plans to stage children’s materials on the main level during the quieter holiday period to avoid elevator traffic. The board did not take formal action on the renovation report; no additional funding was requested at the meeting.
The library will provide a public update if the contractor confirms a firm completion date and when the open-house plans are finalized.
