The commission approved a multi-year contract with Axon Enterprise to continue and expand body-worn cameras, in-car cameras and citywide CCTV storage to support a real-time crime center; staff said the 10-year cost is $15.4 million and signing now yields an estimated $4.1 million savings over waiting until 2026.
The City Commission approved Resolution 195-25 Nov. 18 authorizing a multi-year agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. to provide body-worn camera systems, in-car cameras, interview-room cameras and third-party storage in support of a real-time crime center.
Deputy Chief Rodney Stevens told the commission the department first implemented Axon body-worn cameras in 2016, added car and interview-room cameras in 2018, and is now seeking to secure expanded storage and integrations as the police department expands license-plate readers and CCTV coverage. The proposed contract term is five years with a five-year renewal option; staff presented a 10‑year total cost of $15,401,896.33 and said the structure locks in current pricing, avoiding a projected increase to nearly $19.5 million by waiting until contract expiration. Staff said the purchase is budgeted in the operating budget for fiscal year 2025–26, and that there is no immediate additional fiscal-year impact.
Stevens and staff said the contract supports accountability, training, and de-escalation efforts and enables a real-time crime center—s data integration. Commissioners asked about budget timing and near-term fiscal impacts; staff responded that the contract is included in the existing budget and that the long-term pricing stabilizes costs and provides technology upgrades.
A motion to approve Resolution 195-25 passed by unanimous voice vote. Staff said they will return any necessary implementing documents and ensure operations and training coordination with Axon and police staff.
