Parish notifies residents of BNSF crossing work; warns of potential Barton Avenue closure

"If you're at home watching the council meeting, tonight, please avoid Barton Avenue between the hours of 7AM and 5PM," Jewell said.
Jewell said the work has been delayed for over a year because the state transportation agency, DOTD, previously declined to facilitate a closure of Barton Avenue. "DOTD said they could not facilitate the closure of Barton Avenue," she said, and added that the parish told DOTD to inform the parish what it could or could not do. Jewell said the parish is prepared to close the road itself if necessary to avoid another yearlong delay.
The parish has notified residents via Facebook and automated phone calls. Jewell also said the parish's upcoming road maintenance and surveying program will include railroad crossings and that an objective report on crossings is planned.
No formal motion or vote accompanied the announcement; Jewell framed the statement as operational notice and an instruction for residents to plan alternate routes during the repair window.
