The City of Aberdeen council approved a request from the police department to declare an issued duty weapon surplus so it can be transferred and sold to a retiring officer.
Police leadership said the department’s longstanding policy is to surplus issued duty weapons to members who retire in good standing. The weapon to be declared surplus carried serial number BZAE531. The department indicated the purchase price will be covered by private donations from department members and that transfer paperwork and fees will be completed outside the department through a local firearms dealer.
Council members offered thanks and the retiree, Dave McNeil, who will be serving as city manager, expressed appreciation for the donation. The council approved the surplus declaration by roll-call vote.
