At a Lakeland District policy committee meeting, members reviewed the district's election policy language to confirm it aligns with Idaho law and IDAPA rules, and identified a small set of provisions that must be changed to match statute.
The committee read policy text stating that "board trustee election shall be held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November in odd numbered years," and outlined declaration-of-candidacy requirements that the candidate provide name, term sought and signatures of at least five district electors and file with the county clerk by 5 p.m. on the tenth day before the election. The members debated how write-in declarations are treated and how filing deadlines differ between regular candidates and write-ins.
Speaker 2, a trustee, said, "The only thing that's that absolutely has to be changed, because it no longer aligns with law is highlighted in red." Committee members worked through wording around the ninth Friday filing language and whether write-ins could effectively be declared elected if alone on the ballot.
Members emphasized that the draft includes statutory language and that Sierra had linked relevant statutes for review; administration had not provided a separate recommendation because most language comes directly from statute. Speaker 1 noted the committee's plan that the corrected text "can go to Rusty and then to the board" for final consideration.
The committee did not take a formal vote at this meeting. Staff and committee members agreed to refine language on filing deadlines and write-in procedures, then forward the revised policy to the superintendent's office and the full board for final action.
