The Sumner City Council on Nov. 17 unanimously approved a resolution setting the city’s 2026 property tax levy, adopting a 1% statutory increase and adding revenue from new construction and administrative adjustments.
Chief Financial Officer Cassandra Raymond told the council the city’s total 2026 levy will be $5,240,678 and the city’s levy rate will be just over $0.90. Raymond said the city’s assessed valuation rose about 3% overall, with the average single-family residence up about 1.8%. She said the city receives roughly 8% of the overall property-tax bill paid by residents; other taxing districts receive the remainder.
Raymond summarized the process leading to the vote: Pierce County provided preliminary assessed valuations in September, the finance committee made a recommendation and the council held a public hearing on Nov. 3. She told the council a 1% increase on last year’s collections adds about $50,409; revenue from new construction contributed about $142,000 to the levy calculation.
The mayor called for comments; none were offered. Council member Cole moved to approve the resolution and Council member Clerget seconded the motion. The clerk conducted a roll call and the motion passed unanimously.
What’s next: Raymond will file certification documents with Pierce County to finalize the tax-year 2026 levy.
