Wayne council approves appointments, event permits and hears updates on Gaudi Park and downtown events

Procedural actions: Council approved the evening’s agenda and minutes from the Nov. 3 regular meeting; it accepted the immediate resignation of Sharon Arthur Chestnut Street from the Wayne Historical Commission and approved appointments to the Recreation Partnership Committee (Mayor John Racy, Councilman Rabi Darwish and Councilwoman Kathy Lawrence). The consent calendar — Wayne Historical Commission minutes (July 14, 2025) and Wayne Downtown Development Authority minutes (Oct. 8, 2025) — was approved.
Events and permits: Council approved a five‑minute fireworks display at Hillcrest Bible Church as part of the city’s Dec. 5 tree‑lighting ceremony. The DDA’s Lisa Cabini described Small Business Saturday activities on Nov. 29 (tote-bag giveaways and live music at local businesses), the Dec. 5 tree lighting with Santa, wristband ‘fast pass’ logistics, road closures around Hillcrest and accessible parking plans, a free family photo booth at Hillcrest and other promotional details.
City projects and grants: City administration reported that phase 1 of the Gaudi Park renovation is on track for completion, with roof work, topsoiling and cleanup near done; phase 2 work on parking, seating, playscape and a splash pad is planned for 2026. The city noted a $210,000 grant for the Atwood mile‑walk path and $27,000 from Wayne County to support pickleball courts, and that the Infinity Home project will begin construction.
Public comment and staff response: During non‑agenda public comment residents raised several local concerns including questions about the status of a proposed Dan’s Ice Cream business, road surfacing and manhole covers on Michigan Avenue, and safety issues at Newberg Road near a Dollar Tree entrance. The city manager said Dan’s Ice Cream is tied up in a legal proceeding and that a contractor at the building across from Karma Coffee was temporarily shut down after MIOSHA cited unsafe practices; the city has issued vacant‑property fees and is monitoring compliance.
