Penobscot County will not renew regional economic-development director contract

Penobscot County commissioners voted Oct. 29 not to renew the existing contract for the county’s regional economic-development director.
Commissioners cited mixed results from the position and recent regional meetings that prompted a review. One commissioner said the role had “started out with great intention” but had not produced the expected results; commissioners reported recent follow-up meetings with regional partners and asked staff to negotiate a new approach. The board noted the current contract expires Nov. 6 and agreed to let it expire rather than amend it mid-term.
The motion to not renew the contract was moved, seconded and approved unanimously. Commissioners said they plan to continue regional engagement—working with towns and regional partners to design a successor arrangement that could better meet county and regional needs—and to bring proposals forward for future consideration.
