Kennebec County approves new FOP contract for sheriff’s office, authorizes retro pay

Kennebec County Commissioners on Oct. 7 voted unanimously to approve a negotiated contract with the Fraternal Order of Police representing sheriff’s office staff and authorized the chairman to sign the agreement.
The contract, introduced at the meeting as the negotiated FOP contract, includes salary increases for sheriff’s office personnel intended to help recruitment and retention. County staff said pay changes will be entered into the payroll system immediately and that a separate payroll on Oct. 24 will process retroactive pay owed under the agreement.
Sheriff Mason told commissioners the department is under unusual staffing pressure, citing about 30 overtime shifts in September compared with a typical five to 10 for that period. He said absences for training, deployments and injuries have stretched patrol staff and that some domestic-violence investigators have helped fill shifts to avoid burnout. The sheriff warned the overtime budget will likely be exceeded because of the unusually high overtime demand.
Commissioner (Speaker 2) moved to approve the contract and authorize the chairman to sign; another commissioner (Speaker 1) seconded. Commissioners recorded aye votes and the motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: payroll staff will update pay rates for affected employees and run a separate retro payroll to ensure back pay is processed on Oct. 24, according to the county’s finance update at the meeting.
