Kennebec County reports jail vacancies and names incoming finance director

County human resources staff updated commissioners that the jail currently has 10 vacant positions and that five of those have been filled with recruits who are expected to start with the November academy class. The HR presenter said a deputy position and an EMA/GIS vacancy remain open; one previously hired candidate declined to relocate after accepting the job. “They’re hard to come by right now,” the HR presenter said of recruits, noting the county has been hiring repeatedly for some positions.
The meeting also included the announcement that Scott Adkins has been hired as finance director and will start with Kennebec County on Nov. 10. HR and finance staff said they are working together to implement updates required by a new FOP contract, including wage and back‑pay adjustments, and that NTEU negotiations are ongoing.
Commissioners asked about recruitment strategies, scheduling of interviews for the vacant GIS position, and whether staff could meet separately with the HR director to review particulars. HR said it would continue interviews and return with updates at future meetings.
