Kane County board tables District 2 appointment, approves trustee and accepts Liberty Tree donation

The Kane County Board addressed several personnel and ceremonial items Nov. 17. Chair Gumbs reviewed the statutory process for filling the vacant District 2 seat created by the death of Dale Berman and recommended appointing Mary Berman, a long‑time resident who said she is not a candidate in the upcoming primary, citing continuity and avoiding the appearance of incumbency advantage.
Discussion followed. Member Leonard moved to enter closed session to discuss candidate selection; the motion was approved by roll call under the OMA exception for selection of a person to fill a public office. The board returned to open session and Member Sanchez moved to table the nomination; the motion to table was carried. No appointment was made at the meeting.
Separately, the board considered a trustee recommendation for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). Staff presented recommended candidates and the board approved the recommended candidate by roll call.
The board also accepted a gift from the Elias Kent Caine chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution: an American elm sapling (currently small, described in the meeting as roughly 17 inches) and plaque to commemorate the Liberty Tree. Board members discussed species, disease resistance and planting plans and approved acceptance by roll call.
None of these board actions change existing election timelines; the chair reiterated statutory requirements governing appointments and the timeline for filling vacancies.
