The South Portland School Board opened Tuesday’s meeting by recognizing the South Portland High School Marching Band for winning a gold medal and receiving strong judge ratings at the Maine Band Directors State competition.
Band director Jen Fletcher, in her fifteenth year with the program, told the board that the season began with leadership auditions in June and a week‑and‑a‑half band camp in August and involved hundreds of hours of rehearsal. Fletcher said the achievement required work from 41 students and about 10 staff members and represented a rebuilding of the program after COVID‑era disruption. “It’s the first time in many years that I’ve seen this level of passion and high‑caliber performance from the South Portland band,” she said.
The board presented certificates to staff and students and invited the group for a photograph. Fletcher noted upcoming performances, including the Veterans Day Parade and visits to local veterans’ facilities.
