The council considered and adopted an ordinance that would limit the placement of fully automated car washes so that no more than one such facility exists within a five-mile radius. Proponent Mr. Myers, who identified himself as a business owner building multiple car washes, said the spacing ordinance will prevent oversaturation of specialized properties and protect future viability. He noted he was having his fifth location built approximately 4.5 miles from another and argued spacing is appropriate for major thoroughfares.
Other members asked whether the five-mile measure would be "as the crow flies" or by road distance and cautioned that such a distance restriction could unintentionally affect areas targeted for new development. After a brief technical exchange and suspension of the rules, the council voted to adopt the ordinance; members recorded support and opposition during the roll call and the chair announced the motion carried.
Staff and council discussed that the ordinance is meant to target clustering on major corridors and that routine planning review would still apply for individual proposals.
