Council approves $199,000 loader and $325,000 wind sifter for compost facility

Public Works Director Doug Gompert presented two equipment purchases for the city’s compost facility and the council approved both requests.
First, Gompert described a Case 621G XR wheel loader offered through Sourcewell/Titan Machinery with a $14,000 trade‑in for the city’s older Caterpillar loader, arriving as a new unit at a net $199,000. He said the purchase price is below the $240,000 budgeted amount and noted the trade-in was heavily used.
Second, Gompert proposed purchasing a Comtech hurricane wind sifter — a machine that removes small trash and improves compost quality — for $325,000 through Sourcewell; staff said this was a demo unit with few hours and budgeted at about $380,000. Gompert said the new equipment will increase the product quality of Scottsbluff Compost and could allow the city to charge more for the finished product.
Council members asked about building readiness to house equipment this winter and schedule/timing; staff said a new building should be complete late October and procurement will proceed so equipment can be accommodated. The council moved and approved each purchase by roll call.
