Library director seeks council approval to exit consortium, switch software to Apollo to cut annual costs

Elaine Blish, the library director, told the council the library entered an interlocal agreement in 2016 to participate in an integrated library system with other regional libraries and now seeks to withdraw from the West Nebraska Library Consortium to migrate its catalog and patron database from SirsiDynix to Apollo.
Blish said Apollo is a simpler system that better fits the library’s needs, will be easier for staff, and offers features patrons will use. She estimated the current annual cost at about $15,000 and said Apollo would cost roughly $5,000 per year. Blish said migration has an initial cost — she estimated about $7,000 — and that the Nebraska Library Commission is holding funds to mitigate migration costs.
Councilmembers asked which other local libraries use Apollo; Blish listed Alliance, Gering, Kimball and Bridgeport and said many Western Nebraska libraries already use the platform. After discussion, a councilmember moved and the council approved the resolution authorizing the mayor to sign the withdrawal from the consortium and begin migration to Apollo.
