Brookside third-graders showcase character-education projects at board meeting

Third-grade students from Brookside Elementary presented their character-education work at the Nov. 17 Yorktown Central School District board meeting, describing monthly focuses on traits such as friendship, kindness and gratitude.
Teachers Carrie Vilardo, Mrs. Gallinelli and Diane Angelini introduced students who explained projects that included reading books (Bad Apple; Each Kindness; Those Shoes), creating World Kindness Day stickers printed via Canva and assembling gratitude baskets and letters for local service providers such as the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department, Police Department, Volunteer Ambulance Corps, postal workers and the town’s highway and water departments.
Students said the projects helped them practice kindness and gratitude in school and in the broader community. Board members responded with praise: "What a great presentation," one board member said, and the superintendent told students, "You guys did so great tonight," and invited the class to return to share future projects on generosity.
The presentation highlighted classroom use of digital tools (students used Canva for sticker design), cross-class collaboration with other third-grade teachers and a hands-on community service component of delivering baskets and gratitude notes.
Board members thanked teachers and students and noted the district’s emphasis on character education as part of literacy and social-emotional learning efforts.
