SEIU representative urges University Heights council to back Bellfair JCB workers after employer withdrew union recognition

Bryce Dawson, speaking as a representative of the Workers Justice Committee and SEIU 1199, told the University Heights City Council during public comment that Bellfair JCB withdrew recognition of a bargaining unit representing more than 300 employees on Sept. 25.
Dawson said the withdrawal was announced five days before the contract's expiration, that at least two employees resigned amid pressure from management not to organize, and that workers now face "at will" status while a National Labor Relations Board review and complaint are likely to be delayed. "Workers were not given a chance to decertify their union," Dawson said, adding that employees and clients live in University Heights and that local elected officials can use their voices in support.
An official in the meeting offered to speak with Dawson further and provided a City Hall contact number; the official also said they would be reachable through the end of the year and offered to join organized pickets if they occur before year‑end. Dawson provided contact information for follow‑up.
The public comment did not prompt a council motion or formal action; the council thanked the speaker and moved on to the posted agenda.
