The Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education on Nov. 17 approved several curriculum changes for implementation in 2026–27, including a college-level digital journalism course with dual-enrollment credit, a revised computer science sequence and an AP Cybersecurity course in partnership with Farmingdale State College.
Board materials describe the journalism course as an enhancement to existing journalism offerings with in-class exercises, reporting assignments and a focus on journalistic values and ethics; the course carries three Stony Brook University credits at a reduced total cost of $300 (and a $100 discounted rate for qualifying students). A public commenter later asked whether the district or community could cover the $100 fee for disadvantaged students.
The board approved a revision to present Computer Science Essentials as two half-year courses (Essentials 1 and 2) to increase scheduling flexibility and address New York State Computer Science and Digital Fluency standards. The board also approved a 3-credit AP Cybersecurity dual-enrollment course in partnership with Farmingdale State College, intended to prepare students for college-level cybersecurity curricula.
Separately, the board approved converting certain arts courses from full-year to half-year offerings and adding unified half-year courses in creative crafts, media arts and studio art to expand opportunities for students in life-skills programs to collaborate with general-education peers.
Each course proposal was moved and approved by unanimous voice vote during the meeting. Board members described the package as an expansion of college, AP and career-ready offerings for Huntington students.
