Council approves three state fire grants to buy equipment and reimburse training

Fire Chief Dave Bowen briefed council on three state grant opportunities through the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of State Fire Marshal. Bowen said the city qualifies for the Small County Fire Department grant (for departments with less than half of members paying into OP&F) and that the grants require no local match.
Chief Bowen said the $50,000 small-county grant would be used to purchase extrication equipment to outfit a new engine when it arrives, moving older equipment down to the current primary engine. "With this $50,000, we would like to purchase extrication equipment to replace a 20 year old set that is on the engine that is gonna be outgoing," Bowen said.
Council also approved an equipment grant (up to $15,000) for smaller items such as hoses and valves and added and approved a training reimbursement grant (up to $15,000) to reimburse classes the department paid for in 2025. Bowen estimated the equipment grant reimbursement would be in the $3,000–$4,000 range and said the training reimbursement would not hit the $15,000 cap.
Council voted separately on each grant application as requested by the chief; all three motions carried on roll call.
