Louisa County supervisors ask VDOT to study truck restrictions, approve fair funding and airport grant supplement

The Louisa County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 17 voted to request that the Virginia Department of Transportation evaluate a through‑truck traffic restriction on Route 665 (Cannon Road) and include Route 605 (Willis Prophet Road) in any study of alternate routing, citing resident safety concerns and roadway wear.
Board staff told supervisors that the requested detour routing would keep trucks on established truck routes via Routes 522 and 33 and would add roughly two miles to affected trips; staff estimated Kennon (Kennon/Kenan) Road is about 2.55 miles long and the proposed detour would be roughly 4.58 miles. The board moved and approved the request following discussion about mapping and likely GPS behavior.
In separate votes, the board approved the tourism advisory committee's recommendation to provide $54,450 in county tourism support to the Louisa County Fair (funded from transient occupancy tax/‘TOT’ revenue), a sizable increase from the prior year's allocations but below the fair's full request of $131,867.25. Cindy King, presenting the committee recommendation, said the award is intended to cover security, rentals, marketing, tram and gate administration costs and an increased music budget. The motion carried 6–1.
The board also approved a budget supplement to accept remaining Virginia Department of Aviation grant funds for a Louisa County Airport fuel‑tank relocation project. Staff reported the airport received a grant of a little over $145,000; $72,000 had been appropriated earlier and the board appropriated the remaining roughly $73,000 plus a local match of $71,004.45. The airport resolution passed unanimously.
Other procedural actions included amending the 2025 Board meeting schedule to cancel the Dec. 15 meeting and appointing Karen Coleman to the Commission on Aging (Mineral District). The board also certified the contents of a prior closed session under Virginia law at the start of the meeting.
