The Berkeley County Schools Board authorized procurement of a water storage tank for the Mountain Ridge Primary project after staff said on-site water capacity is required to meet sprinkler and fire-suppression standards.
Tyson told the board that the municipal/public water pressure near the Jaredstown site is insufficient for the required fire-suppression system and that the district, in consultation with the state fire marshal and architects, determined it needs an approximately 84,000-gallon storage tank. Staff presented a quote of $476,950 for the tank and said there is a 34–38 week lead time to manufacture and deliver the unit, which would put installation on a schedule to meet a July project milestone for the school opening.
Board members asked about associated equipment and costs; staff said pump selection (diesel, electric or hybrid), pump housing/structure and final installation pricing are separate items that will be returned as change orders once staff receive definitive pump quotes. One board member raised proximity and safety questions about siting (concern about hunting and project safety); staff said the tank is double-walled and that additional enclosure details will be provided.
The board approved a motion to purchase the tank at the quoted price and the motion carried. Staff will return with pump and structure costs and any change orders needed to complete the fire‑suppression system.
