Kokomo Fire Department Merit Commission accepts retirement and resignation, hires new firefighter and updates handbook

The commission announced and accepted the retirement of Daniel Guffey. Speaker 1 said Guffey is “officially retired,” noted paperwork listing an Oct. 24 effective date, and added that Guffey is “on the pension rolls working for Walt Disney in Florida.” The commission then entertained a motion to accept the retirement; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The commission also noted the resignation of James Schaeffer. Speaker 1 said Schaeffer took a lateral transfer to the Avon Fire Department. The commission moved to accept Schaeffer’s resignation; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
On hiring, the commission considered Landon Bartley. Speaker 1 said Bartley had previously appeared before the commission, resolved certification issues, and had passed the PERF physical and psychological evaluations. Commissioners approved Bartley’s appointment and directed that his information be sent to PERF the following day.
The commission reviewed and approved corrections to the Merit Commission handbook after members said they had adequate time to review the changes. Speaker 2 announced the commission’s next meeting will be Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. in the same chambers. A motion to adjourn was made, seconded and carried.
