The Hampshire County Commission voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with Hardy County to perform a retracement survey of the 1888 boundary between the two counties. President Englinger explained clerk, assessor and GIS staff from both counties reviewed handwritten 19th-century maps and agreed the historic line needs GPS retracement and monumentation.
The MOU estimates about 350 hours of office and field work at $100 per hour and $100 per hour for GPS unit use, producing an initial rough estimate of approximately $35,000. Monumentation costs will be additional depending on marker type and location. The retracement will use the recorded 1888 survey; parties emphasize this is a retracement, not a change to the historic boundary. Commissioners agreed the cost will be split evenly with Hardy County and committed to notifying property owners who could be affected.
