Robert Donaldson, representing the Deltona Firefighters Foundation and Deltona Fire Department, presented an update on Operation Deltona Cares, the department’s annual program that provides holiday assistance to families in need. Donaldson traced the program’s origins to 2010 when Lieutenant Christy Gallagher began helping families from personal funds; it grew into a department and union-supported effort with partner stores and local businesses.
Donaldson said the program has steadily expanded: staff reviewed growth since 2019 (from about 20 families to larger recent totals) and reported 108 applications as of 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting. The program organizes toy drives, a Santa’s workshop at a fire training room, and a drive‑through distribution day at Station 61. Donaldson said financial donations are the greatest need and that donations will be accepted through the 20th (donation drop-off at City Hall). He noted Walmart and several restaurants as community partners.
Several commissioners offered financial support from their event-allocation funds: Commissioner Novick and Commissioner Howington each pledged $1,000; Commissioner Caldwell said she would also contribute $1,000. Commissioners and staff thanked the firefighters and community volunteers.
Donaldson encouraged residents to apply via the online application and to volunteer or donate; no public controversy or follow-up action was recorded beyond commissioner pledges.
