Harnett County honors Marine Corps Corporal Ricky D. Manning on Wall of Heroes

The Harnett County Board of Commissioners recognized Corporal Ricky D. Manning Tuesday, presenting a certificate and adding his name to the county’s Wall of Heroes.
County officials read a citation recounting Manning’s actions on Sept. 18, 1968, when an enemy round ignited a fire in ammunition storage. The citation states Manning “immediately seized the fire extinguisher and, unhesitantly, leaving his position of relatively safety, rushed across the fire swept terrain to the burning emplacement,” and that his actions “undoubtedly prevented a secondary explosion and possible injury or deaths to nearby personnel.” The citation authorizes him to wear the Combat V for his actions.
The recognition was signed by Brent Trout, identified on the certificate as county manager, and Matthew Nickel, identified as chairman of the Harnett County Board of Commissioners. The county indicated the citation and placement on the Wall of Heroes will remain part of Harnett County’s historical record.
No votes or further action were required of the board following the recognition.
