Punta Gorda council elects Deborah Luxe as mayor, Janine Polk vice mayor

Deborah Luxe was elected mayor of Punta Gorda by a 3–2 show of hands at the City Council’s Nov. 19 reorganization session, and Janine Polk was chosen vice mayor by the same margin.
Council followed the procedure laid out in a newly adopted Rule 47 read into the record by interim city attorney Leskovich before opening nominations for mayor and vice mayor. Greg Julian and Deborah Luxe were nominated for mayor. After two calls for additional nominations and a voice/hand count, the mayoral vote resulted in two votes for Julian and three for Luxe; the chair announced ‘By acclamation… Councilmember Luxe, you have been elected mayor.’
The city clerk, Sarah Welch, administered the oath of office earlier in the meeting to newly elected members and read the oath for elected officials. The council discussed procedural details for officer elections, including that nominations do not require a second and that a single nominee may be elected by acclamation.
Councilmembers did not attach conditions to the leadership votes. The reorganization also included routine announcements about meeting dates and the scheduling of the council’s next reorganization session on Dec. 3, 2025.
The election is a procedural reorganization step; no policy changes followed directly from the officer selections. Council will continue its work on pending agenda items under the newly elected leadership.
