Canton Board advances tree ordinance and adopts minor corrections to master plan map

The Canton Township Board of Trustees introduced and advanced a set of planning and ordinance items at the Nov. 18 meeting.
Public trees and woodlands ordinance: The board held the first reading of a proposed ordinance creating article sections 34-81 through 34-100 to establish standards and authority for public trees and woodlands. Staff said the ordinance is needed to qualify for Tree City USA designation; Michigan DNR urban forestry staff reviewed the draft and indicated it was acceptable. Staff also noted several cleanup items and planned edits before the second reading.
Future land use map corrections: After discovering three minor errors (a legend entry, a table entry and one township-owned property near the Lower Rouge River) in the adopted future land use map, staff recommended corrections. The Planning Commission held a public hearing on Nov. 3 and recommended adoption of corrected maps; the board adopted three resolutions to finalize the corrected map and include it in the township master plan.
Zoning Board of Appeals membership: The board introduced a first reading to amend Appendix A of the zoning ordinance to increase the ZBA regular membership from five to seven regular members (with up to two alternates). The Planning Commission recommended approval 8-0 and trustees discussed greater resident interest in serving.
These items will return for subsequent readings or implementation steps as required by ordinance and planning procedures.
