Lake Central outlines behavior-support grant plan to reduce suspensions and seclusion for students with disabilities

Director of Student Services Miss Vermael updated the board on a competitive behavior-support grant awarded by the Indiana Department of Education for 2025. The grant, reported in the meeting as around $115,000, funds district work to support students with disabilities and improve behavior supports at elementary schools.
Miss Vermael said the program includes a book study using Leadership in Behavior Support (Administrator's Guide) published by Safe and Civil Schools, twice-monthly consultant meetings with Threshold Learning Consultants (TLC), and 5–6 days per month of on-site consultant support. Teachers and principals have access to an online portal and referral packets to guide consultant visits to the buildings where help is needed. The district will monitor metrics required by the grant, including in- and out-of-school suspensions for students with disabilities and seclusion/restraint usage, with the goal of reducing both measures over the school year.
Miss Vermael said the grant was competitive and that she would provide specific award documentation to board members if requested; she noted the district had limited initial guidance on the award amount but set programming expectations accordingly.
