Carson City trustees paused business to celebrate student achievements: winners of the Great American Essay Contest across elementary, middle and high school levels (first‑place prizes of $100 at the elementary level noted) and the Carson High girls cross‑country team, which placed second at state and first in regionals were recognized and photographed.
Trustees paused the business portion of the Nov. 17 meeting to recognize student achievements in writing and athletics.
Superintendent Filling introduced the Great American Essay Contest winners (152 entries were received districtwide). Elementary winners included third‑place Kaya Goodwater (Fritch Elementary), second‑place Clara Pappas (Fritch Elementary) and first‑place Maddie Mai (elementary first‑place prize: $100). Middle‑school winners included Arabella Mendoza (third), Savannah Jones (second) and Colette Flynn (first). High‑school winners announced included Mikaela Heider, Roman Gonzales and Claire Dillon.
Students read excerpts from their essays. An elementary reading reflected on the Statue of Liberty and immigration: "The Statue Of Liberty is an important symbol of hope and freedom because it means a new life," one student read. A middle‑school essay titled "Beyond the stripes" reflected on the American flag as "a reminder of the sacrifices and what people fought for." Trustees thanked the students and arranged group photos.
The board also recognized the Carson High girls cross‑country team. Assistant coach John Hager introduced head coach Russ Munyon, who noted the team took second at state and first in regionals and highlighted individual honors for team members. "We took second at state. We took first in regionals," Munyon said, and the board offered congratulations and photos.
Trustees applauded the students and encouraged the community to attend upcoming school events and celebrations.
