Chesapeake says preliminary accreditation results show majority of schools on track or distinguished

Henderson Jones said preliminary pass rates show Chesapeake students exceeding the Virginia state average in all content areas and that, under the new school performance support framework, 80% of the district's schools are preliminarily categorized as "distinguished" or "on track." She explained that final ratings are still pending while the Virginia Department of Education completes review and federal identification data are finalized, noting that a federal identification could lower a school's category by one level and affect potential supports.
Henderson Jones outlined process changes under the new framework: principals will now document implementation of standards of accreditation to the Department of Education in addition to the superintendent's district-level certification. While CPS submitted a standards-of-accreditation report and the superintendent certified implementation, the district awaits third-party validation and finalized state data.
Board members had no questions during the presentation and Henderson Jones said staff will continue to meet with school leaders to use preliminary data to plan supports and improvement work. The board will be kept informed as the VDOE releases final accountability outcomes.
