A representative of the local school district briefed Munhall Borough Council on the new elementary-school project and plans for the old school site.
The district reported that much of the classroom wing is nearing drywall completion, with flooring expected in early February–March 2026. Officials said the project is on schedule and under budget. Enrollment currently stands near 1,472 students and the district expects the new K–5 facility to attract some students back from charter and parochial schools, potentially increasing enrollment and class needs.
On reuse of the old site, the district representative said the plan is to demolish the existing school and market the parcel for development once the new school opens. ‘‘Our goal is to pair that going down to a fresh, clean slate,’’ the representative said, adding the district has discussed sewer capacity with the municipal sewer authority to avoid surprises for future developers.
Council members asked about how many graduates and how transportation would be managed; the district said K–5 will be bused to the new building and that secondary busing is more complex and cost-sensitive. The district also said it plans to keep some gym and administration functions in existing facilities and to lease unused space such as portions of Barrett to community partners.
The council expressed appreciation for the update and encouraged continued coordination between borough staff and the district.
